The conversation
There is a version of Antarctica that arrives slowly. You cross the Drake Passage, watch the first white peaks appear and explore the edge of the continent from the sea.
Sam Bradley’s Antarctica began rather differently. He left Cape Town aboard a rugged aircraft, landed on a vast ice runway and travelled into the interior to test an extraordinary journey for a Cookson Adventures family.
In this episode of Destination Unlocked, Sam joins Daniel to explain what happens on a recce when the destination is the coldest continent on Earth. The job is not merely to decide whether a place is beautiful. It is to work out how a particular family will experience it: how long the walks should be, what the children will enjoy, where a surprise might fit and when everyone needs time simply to stop.
Among Sam’s most vivid memories are the ice caves near the Schirmacher Oasis. After walking across the frozen landscape, he entered passages of blue ice that towered above him. At points, the route narrowed into a tunnel to be crossed on hands and knees.
Then came the emperor penguins. Reaching the colony required another flight, strict biosecurity and careful rules about what could touch the snow. The reward was several hours in a landscape shared with curious penguins, ice cliffs and a leopard seal resting near the water.
This is a conversation about luxury travel, but not luxury as a checklist of marble bathrooms and famous hotel names. At Ultima Oasis Camp, comfort is remarkable precisely because of the environment around it. Guests return from the ice to warm cabins, skilful cooking and a sauna. Yet the aircraft is functional, the bathrooms reflect strict waste rules and every useful object has travelled an immense distance.
For Sam, the deeper luxury is personalisation. Cookson Adventures builds each journey around the people taking it. That can mean a treasure hunt for children, a private camp, an unusual route or a conservation project that gives a family a meaningful role rather than a distant view.
With ice climbing, fat biking, frozen lakes, penguins and caves on offer, Sam tried to fit as much as possible into his short visit. The camp team gave him a better piece of advice: sit down, look through the window and take it in.
It may be the most useful lesson in the episode. In a place that requires so much effort to reach, it is tempting to treat every hour as a challenge to be filled. Antarctica sometimes asks for the opposite.
