Meet Jo Robertson
Jo Robertson is Managing Director of The Aurora Zone, a specialist Northern Lights holiday company. Her enthusiasm began with an unforgettable display over a frozen lake in Finland in 2006, and has grown through travels across the region and holidays with her own family.

An expert on the whole holiday
On Destination Unlocked, Jo joins Daniel Edward to explain how to choose a Northern Lights holiday that suits you. Her starting point is simple: think about how you want to spend your days, where you want to stay and the experiences you would value, alongside your hopes of seeing the aurora.
She discusses Finnish Lapland’s forests and frozen lakes, northern Norway’s coastal landscapes, Swedish wilderness experiences and Iceland’s waterfalls and volcanic scenery. Jo also explains the difference between using a city as a base and staying somewhere remote, where a dark sky may be waiting outside your accommodation.
Travelling with the family
Jo brings a parent’s perspective to the conversation. We discuss dog sledding, snowmobile outings, winter clothing, breaks to warm up, and the joy of several generations sharing an adventure. She also reflects on the appeal of simple moments: hot chocolate by a fire, time outdoors and a holiday where somebody else has organised the details.
Jo’s favourite experiences
A night in glass-roof accommodation is high on her list, with the possibility of watching the lights from bed. March is her personal favourite time to travel, combining daylight for activities with dark nights. She also remembers the traditional wooden cups used during excursions, a souvenir that can bring a fireside moment back home.
