Northern Lights Holidays

Plan a Northern Lights holiday in Finland, Norway, Sweden or Iceland with expert insights from Destination Unlocked.

A Northern Lights holiday starts with a spectacular ambition: seeing the sky move above you. The days can be just as memorable, with snowy forests, fjords, waterfalls, fireside meals and accommodation that brings you closer to the landscape.

This hub brings together Destination Unlocked’s episode with Jo Robertson, Managing Director of The Aurora Zone, and practical guides to choosing the trip that suits you. Our focus is Finland, Norway, Sweden and Iceland, the four countries discussed in the conversation.

Start with the episode

Northern Lights Holidays with Jo Robertson explores the aurora, glass-roof cabins, Arctic activities, family travel and the difference between a city break and a wilderness stay. Jo recalls her first sighting in Finland and shares the experiences she would return for.

Choose the holiday as well as the sky

Northern Lights sightings depend on conditions and cannot be promised. Jo recommends choosing somewhere you would enjoy even if the display never arrives. That might mean a Finnish lodge with activities nearby, a Tromsø base with restaurants and museums, a Swedish wilderness retreat, or an Icelandic itinerary built around natural sights.

A remote stay can make dark-sky viewing easier to fit around your evening. A city base offers more independent choices during the day. Neither solves cloudy weather, and both deserve to be judged on the complete holiday.

Understand the season

Autumn, winter and early spring offer different experiences. Snow activities depend on local conditions; autumn brings walks and changing colours, while later winter can give you longer days for exploring. Jo’s own preference is March. Check the specific destination and itinerary rather than assuming every month delivers the same trip.
