Meet Ben Coombes
Ben Coombes is the founder of Soberski, an alcohol-free ski retreat company rooted in Méribel in the French Alps. He joins Daniel Edward on Destination Unlocked to talk about learning to ski, life in a mountain resort and creating holidays where the mountains take centre stage.
From a first ski trip to a different kind of holiday
Ben discovered skiing as an adult on a trip with colleagues. What began as an invitation to try something new became a passion, and eventually a move to the Alps to work as a chalet driver. He loved the skiing, the landscape and the friendships that came with resort life.
Over time, the combination of work, skiing and regular partying became harder to sustain. Rather than give up a place he loved, Ben decided to return without drinking. Conversations with people who wanted a similar experience helped turn that personal experiment into Soberski.
What Ben wants Soberski to offer
Ben describes a simple belief: you do not need alcohol to have an unforgettable time in the mountains. His approach brings together skiing, adventure, wellness, great food and opportunities to connect with other guests.
The conversation explores the details behind that idea: morning stretching, time on the slopes, chef-prepared dinners and evenings with space for discussion and reflection. Ben remains personally involved in hosting the weeks. The aim is to help people enjoy a mountain holiday without making drinking its organising principle.
