Meet Joshua Zukas
Joshua Zukas is a Hanoi-based writer, author and speaker specialising in Vietnam. His work explores the country through its architecture, culture, food, environment and everyday life, bringing a long-term resident’s perspective to stories that reach beyond familiar travel narratives.
His connection with Vietnam began with a visit in 2007. After studying linguistics and Southeast Asian studies at SOAS, University of London, he returned to make the country his home. He also holds an MSc in Sustainable Tourism from the University of Glasgow.
Journalism, books and audio
Joshua’s reporting ranges from sustainable tourism projects in the countryside to the changing architecture of Vietnam’s cities. He writes about how travel affects communities and landscapes, the histories behind everyday dishes, and the creative work shaping contemporary Vietnam.
His journalism has appeared in publications including The Economist, Lonely Planet, Wallpaper*, Interior Design Magazine, the MICHELIN Guide, National Geographic Traveller, the BBC, Mongabay, The Telegraph, Travel + Leisure, AFAR and CNN.
He is the sole author of Bradt’s Vietnam guidebook and creates immersive audio walking tours for VoiceMap. An enduring interest across these projects is the legacy of Champa and its place in Vietnam’s cultural landscape. His approach favours sustained attention to one country: returning to places, listening to local perspectives and finding the connections between history and the present.
