Sicily is the Mediterranean’s largest island, a place of ancient cities, volcanic landscapes, dazzling coastlines and a food culture shaped by centuries of arrivals. From Palermo’s markets and Arab-Norman architecture to Mount Etna, baroque towns and the Greek temples of Agrigento, Sicily rewards travellers who resist the urge to rush.

Why visit Sicily?

Sicily feels like a country within a country. Its character comes from layers of Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, Spanish and Italian influence, visible in everything from cathedral mosaics to street-food counters. One journey can combine city culture, archaeological sites, vineyard country, volcanic adventure and long afternoons by the sea.

Palermo is the island at its most energetic: grand palaces, neighbourhood markets and extraordinary Arab-Norman monuments share the same streets. The east brings elegant Catania, Taormina’s dramatic setting and the slopes of Mount Etna. South-eastern Sicily is known for the honey-coloured baroque towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa, while the west offers salt pans, fishing communities and routes that feel less travelled.

Planning your Sicily trip

Allow at least a week for one part of the island and ten to fourteen days for a broader road trip. Sicily is larger than it appears on a map, and journeys can take longer than expected. Trains work well between several major cities, but a hire car gives you greater freedom for inland villages, archaeological parks, beaches and rural stays.

Spring and autumn offer warm weather with fewer crowds. Summer is lively and dependable for beach time, but temperatures can be intense and popular resorts book quickly. Winter is a rewarding time for city breaks, food and cultural travel, although some coastal businesses reduce their hours.

Sicily highlights

Start with Palermo for markets, mosaics and the island’s most compelling urban atmosphere. Walk among classical temples at Agrigento, explore the baroque south-east, and spend time around Mount Etna, where lava fields, vineyards and mountain villages reveal Sicily’s living geology. Add one of the smaller islands or a stretch of coast when you want to slow the pace.
