Planning your Sicily trip

Allow at least a week for one part of the island and ten to fourteen days for a broader road trip. Sicily is larger than it appears on a map, and journeys can take longer than expected. Trains work well between several major cities, but a hire car gives you greater freedom for inland villages, archaeological parks, beaches and rural stays.

Spring and autumn offer warm weather with fewer crowds. Summer is lively and dependable for beach time, but temperatures can be intense and popular resorts book quickly. Winter is a rewarding time for city breaks, food and cultural travel, although some coastal businesses reduce their hours.
