Meet Derek Mooneyham

Derek Mooneyham is a Colorado-based traveller, storyteller and Alaska rail guide.

As a third-year guide with Holland America Princess Alaska, he provides onboard narration and entertainment while introducing visitors to the history, wildlife and landscapes surrounding the railway between Alaska’s cruise ports and Denali National Park.

Derek has explored Alaska extensively, including Anchorage, Seward, Homer, Palmer, Juneau, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point and Denali. He has also driven the Alaska Highway from Anchorage to Colorado. Beyond the Last Frontier, his travels have taken him to more than 40 US states and on over 25 cruises across North America, the Caribbean, Mexico and Hawaii.

Before entering travel and tourism, Derek worked in project management, live sports television production and customer service. He brings that varied experience to his work as a guide, combining carefully researched narration with stories, poems, music and plenty of humour.

In episode 33 of the Destination Unlocked podcast, Derek shares what Alaska is really like beyond the cruise stops and how you can enhance your cruise experience by taking a land-based extension either before or after the cruise.
