The conversation

Episode show notes

A hotel barge slips through waterways that larger river ships cannot reach, carrying a handful of guests into the villages, vineyards and food traditions of inland France.

Rosie Mansfield, Chief Executive of French Waterways, joins Daniel Edward to reveal a style of cruising that many travellers do not realise exists. These are not large river vessels following a rapid itinerary between major cities. A luxury hotel barge may carry as few as two guests, with a private chef, dedicated crew and a route shaped around the canals and smaller rivers of France.

Rosie takes us aboard Grand Victoria for her first Burgundy cruise as chief executive. Champagne appears on arrival, dinner becomes a four-course event, and the week’s excursions lead from the Hospices de Beaune to the historic wine presses of Clos de Vougeot and the vines of Romanée-Conti.

Why listen?

This episode explains the practical difference between a river cruise and a hotel-barge holiday. Barges are low and narrow enough to pass beneath small bridges and through shallow canals. They travel slowly, often at walking pace, so guests can step ashore to walk or cycle along the towpath and meet the boat again at a numbered lock.

The small scale changes the experience on land too. Excursions can be timed to avoid coach groups, journeys by road are kept short, and local makers, wine growers and specialist guides become part of the itinerary. Back on board, the chef works with local ingredients while the crew handles the logistics out of sight.

Rosie also explains how French Waterways matches travellers to more than 55 different barges. Cabin size, region, crew, bicycles, family needs and special interests all matter. Burgundy may suit wine lovers, but Champagne, Bordeaux, Alsace, the Canal du Midi and other routes offer very different versions of France.

Rosie’s barge-cruise essentials

  • Best experience: walk or cycle beside the barge as it glides along the towpath.
  • Best season: May and September are especially popular for warm, comfortable days.
  • See this: the Hôtel-Dieu at the Hospices de Beaune.
  • Taste this: regional cheeses, oysters and the wines selected for your route.
  • Bring home: a tastevin, French wine glasses or a small object you will use at the table.
